According to Maori mythology it was Mataora who brought the art of Ta Moko (tattoo) to our world. In pursuit of the beautiful Niwareka, his wife, he journeyed to her homeland of Rarohenga (the underworld). There he endured the pain of uhi (chisel) and mallet to have his flesh carved and dyed by Niwareka's father.
