The copy on the bottom of the postcard reads
'Out fishign with his four elder borthers, the Maori hero Maui used a fishhook made from his grandparents jawbone, baited wiht his own blood, to fish up the North Island of New Zealand. A powerful karakia (incantation), makin heavy things light, helped the hero land his mighty catch Te Ika a Maui (The Fish of Maui). The hook has come to represent prosperity, abundance and is a good luck charm when travelling over water.'
